The CUFL meeting with NUI Galway looked like a difficult game on paper when the fixtures were released 3 weeks ago, and in a very open and attacking first half, the game lived up to its promise. Peter Burke in goal for Letterkenny showed all his class as early as the 3rd minute with a save that took him all the way across his goal to clear a shot from Galway. A goal from Daire McDaid settles the visitors to the Galway venue, as Darie McDaid anticipated the opposition mistake and rounded keeper Kevin Horgan to score in the 6th minute.
Manager Shane Byrne had chose a 4-4-1-1- formation and had briefed both his central midfield pair, Darren Gallagher and Daire McDaid ,to defend firstly and then distribute the ball to the front runners Paul McVeigh and Anthony Appiah. Both midfield players did this in abundance. Gallagher excelled, playing a role not always recognized, he out –jumped his opponents and found his pass consistently.
The second goal came in 34 minutes, a penalty claim by Letterkenny , was reduced to the award of a corner instead, the referee making one of his many poor judgements. However fate played a part when Kevin Doran drove the corner kick with pace to unsettle the Galway defence and cause the Galway goalkeeper Horgan to assist the ball to his own net. In the second half Letterkenny pressed for a 3rd goal and were rewarded when Ryan Connolly, from Rathmullan Celtic, played a well timed pass to Paul McVeigh who placed to the keepers left and well out of reach to make the score 3-0.
Peter Burke, Liam Doherty, Fearghal Harkin, Peter Doherty, Ross Coughlan, Daire McDaid, Kevin Doran, Darren Gallagher, Paul McVeigh, Anthony Appiah, Ryan Connolly, Subs Michael Kisugabagbe ((Doherty), Cian Mulligan (Doran), Keelan McElwaine (Connolly)
