About Clubs & Socs

An Introduction

The Student Union office co-ordinates the creation and development of all clubs and societies within the institute.

With the dozens of exciting diverse and active Clubs & Societies available here at LYIT, there is sure to be something to suit everyone and for you to get involved in.

From participating in teamwork activities, enjoying a great social life, developing as a person, striving for success outside the lecture theatre to learning about how the world works – all of these are very important ways of enriching your student experience.  That’s why we encourage our students to get involved in the Clubs & Societies Programme.  When you take part in something enjoyable, stimulating and challenging, you discover talents you never knew you had and make great life-long friends in the process – all impressive qualities that employers look for in well-rounded people.

How do I join?

On Clubs & Societies Day during FRESHERS Week (September), you can join as many clubs and societies as you like – free of charge. Here’s a small sample of some of the clubs:

  • Watersports: Canoe Club
  • Culture: International Society
  • Technology: Ethical Hacking Society
  • Other: Dance Society, Fashion & Photographic Society

If you have a particular interest or skill and can’t find a club/society to suit you, you can set up your own new club/society.  Provided you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and can identify 10 people who’d like to join, you can put your idea forward for approval.  If approved, the SU will provide you with administrative help and financial support to help get your club off the ground. Keep an eye out on your student email for further details at the start of the academic year in semester 1 and again at the start of semester 2 for details on how to set up new clubs and societies.

For all you need to know about Clubs & Societies at LYIT and to sign up for the wide range of existing clubs and societies available, log on to our brand new Clubs & Societies Platform…

Student Achievement Awards

Extra-curricular activity is not only encouraged, it is rewarded.  One of the highlights of the student year in LYIT is the Student Achievement Awards which takes place in March/April each year.

The event is a symbol of recognition and celebration of the recreational activities carried out by student Clubs & Societies leaders.  Among the awards presented are; Most Outstanding Club Member, Leadership Award, Best Society and the Civic, Charity & Community Engagement Award, which is an award highly regarded in third level education circles and awarded in recognition of the club that best display their skills in engaging with the community.

Clubs and Societies Scholarships

These scholarships are aimed at existing students who are actively involved in the Clubs & Societies Programme at the institute.  The scholarships focus on the volunteering, civic engagement, community and charity work undertaken by the leaders of clubs and societies during the academic year.

Clubs & Societies Scholarship application packs are available internally from the SU General Manager at the beginning of March each year. A portfolio, which includes photos, your stories as a leader and also references during your time as leader, should supplement your application.

Successful applicants in each of the various categories are presented their scholarships at the Student Achievement Awards Night which takes place at the end of Semester 2 each year.  This is one of the social highlights of the student year and offers an appropriate platform for these and other awards to be presented.
